Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)

Non-destructive testing (NDT) refers to tests that are carried out on a component to determine their physical condition and check for presence of cracks or defects in the material without damaging its integrity.

As a forensic engineering and asset integrity assessment company with materials and corrosion expertise, we do not provide merely raw thickness or NDT data to our clients but collate and analyse the data to provide a complete condition assessment of the fitness-for-service condition of a plant or equipment.

NDT is also used for failure analysis and forensic engineering investigation in cases where destructive sampling cannot be conducted.

Apart from the basic NDT such as dye penetrant test, magnetic particle inspection and ultrasonic thickness gauging, the key NDT service that we provide are as follows:

  • In-situ Surface Metallographic Examination: This is also known as SUMP. To replicate and study microstructural condition, micro-cracks and creep damage in materials.
  • In-situ Hardness Test: To measure the hardness of base material, weld region and heat-affected zone which may have implications on the metallurgical condition of the material and weld joints.
  • Internal Bore Oxide Measurement: To determine the internal scale of the super-heater and the re-heater tubes for an estimation of the effective tube metal temperature and remaining life.
  • Positive Material Identification (PMI): To determine chemical composition of material to check for compliance with material specifications.
  • Infrared Thermography: To determine operating temperature of components and to check for presence of hot or cold spots which may affect the service life of a facility.
  • Remote Visual Inspection (RVI)– To facilitate inspection at locations which are too deep in or not directly accessible to the human eye which may involve his may involve robotic or fiberscopic inspection.
  • IRIS and Eddy Current Inspection: To check on physical condition, wastage and defects in tubes or pipes. We have developed a customized probes that can check on the physical condition and defects in tubes around tight boiler bends.
